(Hebrews 4:13, John 3: 16, Acts 16: 31, Revelation 3:20) Page 4 REPENTENCE: To repent means literally to turn around. To receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, one must turn around and allow Jesus to rightly rule in one s life. This does not mean that the person repenting must list his wrongs and then straighten them out before coming to Jesus. The surrender needed is one of the will. I am willing to go your way, Lord . The Lord knows the heart of every person, therefore He cannot be fooled, but the broken and contrite heart, He will never turn away. NOTE: A child can easily receive Jesus as Lord and Savior because of possessing less of a burden of sin and wrong living. An adult however must simply allow Jesus to take over the throne of his life and let Him make the changes He desires. A DESCRIPTION OF REPENTANCE: One person described repentance this way: If you were driving down the highway and you saw Jesus standing on the side of the road, you would stop to pick Him up. You would be surprised when Jesus walks around to your side of the car and says, move over and let me drive . However, you would move over because it s the Lord!. So, when Jesus takes the wheel of your car, He turns it around to head in an entirely different direction from the way you were going.--that is repentance. FAITH: Most people take the word believe in the Bible to mean mental acknowledgement. In other word, if I believe, then that means I agree with what the Bible says. However, the word, believe in such passages as: John 3:16 and others pertaining to salvation means a lot more than just agreement. The ancient word which is translated as believe means to: trust in, rely upon, adhere to and cling to. A person must come into contact with the Word of God and must come to agree with it and with what it says about Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord and about himself as a lost sinner. Romans: 10: 14-17 NOTE: A knowledge of the Scripture and agreement with it s truth are no indication of salvation and no matter how much of the Word a person knows and acknowledges as true, that knowledge is not salvation. 2. This person who has been into contact with the Word of God and agrees that it is true must then be dealt with by the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will take the Word of God in the mind and heart of the sinner and bring conviction through the heart (emotions) of the sinner. The experience may bring soberness or crying or shouting and the emotional experience may be profound, but there is no salvation simply in the conviction of the Spirit no matter how broken or emotional the sinner may become. (John 16: 7-11, Hebrews: 3: 7-10, Hebrews 4: 12-13). 3. After a person has been in contact with the Word of God and has agreed that it is true and that Jesus Christ is Who the Scripture declares Him to be and that he, the sinner is lost and in need of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ---AND after the Holy Spirit has drawn the person to Jesus by convicting him in his heart through his emotions---THEN this person must receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. To receive Jesus means to take Him as He is into one s life by faith. Jesus must come in as Lord as well as \ Savior, because He is both and cannot be one without being the other. One cannot separate the Lordship of Jesus from the Saviorship of Jesus and take Him only as one and not both. He cannot be divided into twcripture tells us that, & even the demons believe and tremble James 2: 19. Here we see that mental acknowledgement and agreement with the facts do not bring salvation. The faith, belief that results in salvation is described in this simple illustration: A DESCRIPTION OF TRUE BELIEVING: I could walk into a room and look at a chair there that is obviously for the purpose of holding up any person who might decide to sit in it. I could examine the chair carefully top to bottom and even look closely at its construction. After my examination, I could firmly agree that this chair will hold me up. Yes, it will hold me up, indeed. But, until I sit on the chair and rest my weight on it, it is not holding me up. One may agree fervently with all of the Bible s claims concerning Jesus and still never commit his life to or rest his own personal eternity on the Lord Jesus by receiving Him as Lord and Savior.
